Slovenian Carinthia (locally known as Koroška) is one of Slovenia's most rugged and authentic regions. Tucked away in the northern part of the country, it is defined by three valleys (Meža, Drava, and Mislinja) and three massive mountain ranges (Pohorje, Karavanke, and the Savinja Alps).

It is a land of deep forests, ancient mining traditions, and a fierce sense of local identity. Unlike the more tourist-heavy Gorenjska (Bled area), Koroška offers a raw, "off-the-beaten-path" experience.

Nature & Landmarks
Koroška is the hilliest and most forested region in Slovenia.

Mount Peca (Petzen): The highest peak in the region, famous for the legend of King Matjaž, who supposedly sleeps in a cave inside the mountain.

Najevska Lime Tree: Located in Ludranski Vrh, this is the oldest tree in Slovenia (estimated at over 700 years old). It serves as a symbolic meeting point for the nation.

The Topla Valley: A protected landscape park featuring stunning alpine homesteads and pristine mountain streams.

The Drava River: A powerful river that offers a different perspective of the landscape, historically used for timber rafting.

Typical Foods (Koroška Delicacies)
The cuisine here is hearty, designed to sustain miners and foresters.

Mežerli: The region’s most famous dish—a warm appetizer made from offal (lung and heart), bread, spices, and eggs.

Kvocevi Nudlni: Sweet or savory dumplings filled with dried pears (kvoce).

Must: A traditional alcoholic drink made from fermented apple or pear juice (cider), very common in every farmstay.

Sourdough Rye Bread: Koroška is famous for its massive, dark, wood-fired loaves of bread that stay fresh for a week.

Crnicov Šnops: A potent blueberry brandy made from wild berries picked in the Pohorje forests.

Activities: The "Underground" & Above
Koroška is a playground for adventure seekers, particularly those who love "alternative" sports.

Podzemlje Pece (Peca Underground): You can take a train into an abandoned lead and zinc mine, but the real highlights are underground kayaking in flooded tunnels or underground mountain biking through 5 km of mine shafts.

Olimpline: Located in Crna na Koroškem, this is the longest zipline in Slovenia, stretching over 1.2 kilometers.

Single Trail Park Jamnica: A world-class mountain biking park with technical trails through forests and meadows.

Drava Cycling Route: A scenic, flatter path that follows the river across the region.

Shops & Local Products
For authentic souvenirs, skip the malls and look for these:

Perger 1757 (Slovenj Gradec): A world-renowned family of gingerbread makers and mead producers. Their shop is like a "honey paradise" with traditional lectar hearts and organic honey sweets.

Koroška Košarica (Carinthian Basket): Look for this brand in local shops and Tourist Information Centers (TICs); it represents a collection of certified local products like honey, oils, and crafts.

Local Markets: The town centers of Slovenj Gradec and Ravne na Koroškem host regular farmers' markets where you can buy "Must" and home-made rye bread directly from the farmers.

Festivals & Events
Snow Castles of King Matjaž (January): A unique winter festival in Crna na Koroškem where teams build elaborate ice and snow sculptures to honor the sleeping king.

Koroška Tourist Week (August): A massive folk festival in Crna featuring traditional crafts, music, and sports.

Meeting under the Najevska Lime Tree: A high-profile annual event where Slovenian leaders and locals gather for a celebration of national culture.
